Clutter Control Tips for Your Home

Home clutter control is perhaps the world’s strangest form of Tetris – trying to fit every little thing in its’ perfect little space.

There are many easy (and potentially fun) options to get your home feeling and looking its best.

Here are some of our favorites:

Assess

What are the main areas of your home that need to be taken care of? When’s the last time you’ve seen your spare room’s floor or been able to reach for your favorite mug without taking all of the other dishware down with you?

Purge

It’s going to hurt. It’s going to be painful. But let it go. Let that prehistoric box of VHS tapes go. Pick your most cluttered rooms and closets and force yourself to throw out the old. You never know, it could be more therapeutic than a candle-lit bubble bath.

Make a point to really decipher what you need in your home versus what you don’t. Put the things you love on display and get rid of the things you know will never see the light of day.

In some instances, it’s important to pre-screen what you bring into your home. Is another tchotchke really going to enhance your home’s overall interior décor? Teach yourself to say no to the things that don’t really matter to avoid the horror that could be next year’s spring-cleaning.  Stop clutter at the source.

Clean

Cleaning is the standard for a tidy space. Keeping things clean will encourage you to keep things organized and clutter-free to keep your home looking picture-perfect.

Create and follow a weekly or monthly cleaning schedule. Pick a day and dedicate it to a certain task: vacuuming, washing the dishes, cleaning the countertops, dusting, etc. and keep up with it throughout the year. The cleaning will be less burdensome as time goes and with your home newly de-cluttered, you’ll be more inclined to keep it spick and span.

Organize

Give everything a home. That way, there’s a place for your items to return to once your finished using them. The more you keep up with an organizational system, the less likely you’ll continue to let cluttered chaos spiral out of control.

Use uncommon spaces and turn them into your best-kept secrets. Behind doors, under beds and sofas can be great places to put things that you aren’t constantly reaching for.

Have you heard of The Container Store? Not only is it an organizer’s dream, The Container Store has a lot of cool storage options. Did you know there are ottomans made to store things in? It’s essentially a glorified, nicely dressed box, but one you can put your feet on!

These few simple tips are enough to ensure a clutter-free environment.
